Planning Needs for Passenger WiFi Under the Cloud
At the October 2, 2011 Joint Council meeting, the Technology Committee provided a short presentation on transit use of cellular networks for public WiFi. Statistics on IP traffic growth and wireless device ownership, along with real-world Amtrak experience suggest many systems for passenger WiFi will become overwhelmed as an increasing number of passenger devices automatically seek updates from the cloud on a continuous basis. Some potential design and partnership strategies to prevent system overload and provide the fullest possible user experience were discussed. The Technology committee will be preparing a white paper on this topic.
