FCC Eliminates Interim Deadline for Manufacturing

On June 30, 2010, the FCC announced that the January 1, 2011 deadline to cease manufacture of wideband equipment for UHF/VHF bands (150-174 MHz and 421-512 MHz) has been changed to January 1, 2013.  This will make it easier for private radio users to continue to maintain wideband systems until the January 1, 2013 deadline, when all voice radio channels in the UHF/VHF band must operate on narrowband (12.5 kHz).

In this announcement, the FCC re-asserted that there will not be any changes in the January 1, 2011 deadline for applications for new or expanding wideband systems, and there will not be any changes in the January 1, 2013 deadline for narrowbanding of the UHF/VHF band.

This announcement was in response to a petition filed by the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) seeking relief from interim narrowbanding requirements.  The Joint Council on Transit Wireless Communications filed comments with the FCC in support of the NPSTC petition.
